Some inspired members of St Stephen’s Church who were passionate about supporting local young people persuaded the PCC to employ a young youth worker. Initially what started as the St Stephen’s youth work project working in the parish, meeting young people on the streets, and working with church volunteers started to grow and has developed into Urban Hope employing a youth work director and a team of youth workers and many more volunteers. Now we offer weekly drop-ins and are active in supporting young people in local schools.
Urban Hope has always had young people at its heart - building positive relationships between them and the youth workers, and providing safe spaces where young people can grow and develop from childhood through adolescence into adulthood. The activities have changed but our heart for young people remains the same.
Urban Hope reaches young people to bring about their transformation, supporting them through to adulthood full of promise and potential.
Urban Hope reaches young people by creating space for them to feel safe and explore who they are without judging them. They can just be. Our youth workers will spend time listening to them, getting to know who they are and to begin connecting with their inner-most feelings.
We want to share young people’s sorrows, joys and all aspects of their lives, enabling them to trust the relationship and to grant permission for their youth workers to speak truth into their lives.
Young people are often labelled by friends, family, schoolteachers or other professionals and, they begin to believe the labels that have been placed upon them or to emulate the labels of others. Urban Hope works with young people to draw out who they are and not whom people say they are.
This reveals their gifts and ambitions that may have been hidden or forgotten, our youth workers will give encouragement and, help young people to believe their individual truths by standing alongside them with love, rather than trying to change or influence them

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
We know that we are not able to do this by ourselves. We really value the time that people are able to offer to Urban Hope. It makes a big difference in our work and in how we can continue to support young people. There is a number of ways you can support the work of Urban Hope.
Financial contributions will provide opportunities for young people and help us to support them through 1-2-1 mentoring. The donations can also be more specific such as buying food or equipment (tennis rackets, board games, cooking equipment) for our youth club sessions, or providing a trip out for young people.
